Capacity building for the institutionalisation of local economic development
This project is aimed at providing capacity building support to the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) towards institutionalisation of Local Economic Development (LED) as framework through which the public, business and non-government sectors work together to strengthen local economies in order to achieve rapid, inclusive, and sustainable economic growth, create decent jobs and improve the quality of life for all. key among the project's deliverables is the draft LED Policy and Strategy which will be essential in the implementation of initiatives aimed poverty eradication as well as economic and social empowerment of localities
Following implementation of various activities under this project, the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development (MLGRD) is on course to provide strategic guidance on the implementation of LED in Botswana. This is as a result of enhanced technical capacity within the ministry. A process that would result the development of an LED Concept Paper and Discussion Paper is underway. These documents will inform the basis for a formal government position paper on LED once consultations have been concluded. Local capacity has been built following training on LED for district economic and physical planners in all sub-districts and districts that was completed in 2012. Additionally, a Local Economy Assessment manual has been prepared to facilitate effective local economy assessment processes.
Project funding and delivery
The project is funded by the Government of Botswana and UNDP under a cost-sharing arrangement. It is implemented by the Department of Local Government and Development Planning in the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development under the National Execution (NEX) modality. Local Economic Development, which the project supports, is a strategic initiative key initiative for poverty eradication.
