The introduction of solar power in Kgope is the result of efforts by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Global Environment Facility (GEF), in partnership with the Government of Botswana and local communities, to provide eco-friendly energy access throughout the country.
In responding to this year’s call by the Secretary General for citizens of the world “to speak out” and “participate”, the Botswana Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) and UN facilitated a public discussion with governance practitioners and civil society representatives to commemorate the International Democracy Day, under the theme “Strengthening the Voices of Democracy”.
Botswana has been turning the tide against HIV and AIDS. Several of the country’s health indicators that had deteriorated owing to the effects of HIV and AIDS have been on the rebound. The rate of progress has been slower on life expectancy, maternal mortality and the reduction of the incidence of Tuberculosis.
In partnership with the Government of Botswana, UNDP has piloted a Legal Aid initiative aimed at designing a legal aid programme that promotes greater access to justice and utilisation of legal services by Batswana. UNDP promotes effective, responsive, accessible and fair justice systems as a pillar of democratic governance.
Until recently, the Southern Sua Pan, an important breeding site for the Lesser flamingo, an endangered bird species in the Makgadikgadi wetland system was like any part of the Botswana’s bird sanctuaries – not protected by law and accessible to all.
